What the Hell Just Happened?

It was early afternoon, I think, when the pains started bothering me. My right hand was visibly swollen, redding appearing in the meaty part of the thumb and also where the hand joins the wrist. (To be honest, my thumb had been bothering me for some weeks.)

Then, both my knees began to hurt. This is the first time I can recall that happening. By Sunday morning I was nearly incapacitated. I took some Oxycodone I had saved from a previous illness. It only helped a little. Every step I took was agony. My knees were both swollen with red patches that were warm to the touch.

I tried to get comfortable in my LayZboy, where I spent most of the day watching TV. I started to feel chills, so I covered myself. Later I felt hot, and felt my sweat soaking through a little bit. I took my temperature: 99.8. It would get as high as 100.5. I definitely felt ill, in addition to the pain that was making me miserable.

I had seen a rheumatologist last year who diagnosed me as having palindromic rheumatism. Is this what I was experiencing?

Hurt my back this morning pruning a large hedge in my front yard. I bent down and got a sharp pain in my lower left back as the muscle spasmed.

A real jaw-dropper

So I'm at work today, just working along, when my right jaw starts to hurt. It gets to where it really hurts to open my mouth (insert sarcastic comment here). Now I'm home and the pain is worse. I can hardly chew anything. Mind you, as usual, there was no trauma of any kind. Nobody hit me, I didn't fall or run into a door, nothing. I tell a co-worker about it, he says, "heart attack", but I'm having no other symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.

I'm home now, so I take a look at WebMD, where the only thing I can find is something called Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), so I'm going to follow the recommendations found there, starting with ice, which I am doing now. We will see what happens.

My Next T-Shirt

Anyone know where I can buy this?

Fair and Balanced, my ass!

A Fox "News" internal memo has been leaked, in which their "journalists" are told how to slant the news. Read it for yourselves.

I forgot to mention...

...that a couple of weeks ago I was moving some product around where I work (vague enough for you?), stuff that is not heavy or cumbersome at all. Back and forth I go, moving ten of these things from one cart to another.

During one of these moves, I swung my right arm too far, smacking my elbow, my surgically repaired elbow, on the sharp corner of a small keyboard holder. Said keyboard holder is made of hard plastic, and is totally immobile, therefore delivering maximum impact to my arm. I clutched my elbow and swore like a sailor being told he's going back to Iraq for the fifth time. After a few minutes, I told my supervisor, and he came over to my work area and I showed him what had happened. He said he would get someone from Facilities to fix the problem.

Fast-forward two weeks, and the fucking keyboard thing looks exactly the same, its sharp corner daring me to fling some other body part carelessly at its rock-hard edge. I tell my supervisor, and he is surprised by the information that nothing has been done. I wonder to myself if it ever occurred to him to check on it personally - I think if I was in his position I would.

So, now I wonder if I will have to make that trek back to his desk two weeks hence. Or should I go over his head?

My Left Hand...

...has healed itself, mostly, in the last two weeks. I woke up one morning, unable to curl the fingers of my left hand without severe pain. This, while my left foot (see previous post) was aching as well.

I went in to work anyway because, I'm an idiot, and did the best I could, one-handed. If I were not right-handed, I could not have worked. I called my doctor and was able to get a same-day appointment. I had taken nothing for the pain so the doctor could witness it.

So I'm doing my job, holding my left hand up slightly to ease the throbbing, simultaneously raising up on my left toe, shifting most of my weight to my right leg.

After a bit, I said to myself, "self, what the fuck are you doing?" I couldn't take the pain anymore. I told my boss and went home.

When the time came, I kept my doctor appointment. He diagnosed the foot pain by my description alone. Then he examined my hand. He squeezed the side of the joints on a few of my fingers. No pain. I demonstrated by trying to curl my fingers. Severe pain in the fingers and into the hand. The doctor said he'd never seen anything like it, but suspected some type of arthritic involvement, and I got a referral and a script for naproxen, 500 mg.

My Left Foot

My GP diagnosed the pain in my left heel as Plantar Fasciitis. Gave me a script for naproxen, 500mg. Also said a good treatment is to submerge your foot in a bucket of ice! Holy schnikies! I think that would be only slightly less pleasant than pounding my testicles flat with a mallet. Standing on it for hours on end really doesn't feel good. I need to look into the exercises that are supposed to help.

As I am typing this, I have the World Series on the tube, and I have now heard and seen Chevy's "This is our country" ad for the 9 millionth time. I am so sick of it I could puke. Come to think of it, their previous campaign featured the song, "Like A Rock", which ran for fucking years. Yes, I was sick of that one too.

My dog Brandy is doing better. She has hip dysplasia, and is quite old. She is on Prednisone now, and doesn't seem to be in any pain, although she stumbles around a bit.

Today's pains

Well, I got a new blade for my razor-knofe thingy at work. The old one was too dull. So I carefully replaced it, without injury, and continued at my work. I noticed a small amount of something on the blade, so I took a damp green wipe and pulled the blade through it.

Bad decision.

I knew immediately that I had cut my finger, but there was no blood. It didn't really hurt either. After what seemed like a minute, blood appeared on my middle finger. I'm off to get a bandaid, while the blood keeps coming, so I have to put my other hand underneath to keep from spilling any. I wash my hands and apply pressure for a bit to get the bleeding stopped. I'm off to a good start today!
